30 Days Project: Destination Wedding, Rome

When in Rome: get married and take amazing photos.

Planning your destination wedding? I traveled to Rome to meet up with Karen and Thomas.  The photo session in Rome was a fantastic experience, but we had to get up pretty early in the morning to beat the tourists to the best locations.  The early bird gets the photos!  The wedding portrait photo shoot was a perfect combination for me.  Making portraits with beautiful landscapes in the background is very much “my thing,” but add some incredible street photography with a documentary and historical twist and I am in heaven.  Still, it’s not just enough to be in the location, there is so much going on in every photograph.  The photographer has to be aware of every element in the background and how it interacts with the couple in the foreground.

The addition of documentary style street photography going on all around us meant that I needed to be watching two stories at the same time.  How does the story in the background interact with the story in the foreground?  It’s not just about composition.. there are stories being told as well, and there are moving elements that can intersect with the subject at any time and then there is exposure and lighting.  It’s no walk in the park, but it’s a whole lot of fun.  I hope you enjoy this look back at a beautiful wedding as much as I do.

Clip is such a simple way to make slideshows and can be done from your iPad or Smart Phone in just a few short minutes. I can’t say enough good things about Adobe Clip. It even has a few songs for simple projects, but the number is seriously small and they aren’t that great. That’s another reason to use Triple Scoop Music’s subscription service. This slideshow was made with Adobe Premiere Clip. Clip accesses all of my photos in Lightroom CC and creates beautiful slideshows in seconds right on my iPad or iPhone. The beauty of Clip is that I can either make a super simple and fast slideshow, or I can further edit that slideshow or movie in Adobe Premiere. In this case, I did the entire thing in Adobe Clip and sent it right to the web.  You are seeing fifteen years of photographic work.  The slideshow itself took about 50 seconds to create with another 20 minutes of finessing to get the perfect timing on the gaps.  But every minute of it was fun.  I did it all on my iPad late last night on my living room couch with my headphones blasting away.  It was a nice way to spend the last minutes of my waking day.

30 Days Project: Child Life Portraits by Jared Platt

Child Life Portraits are full of personality and life.

Portrait sessions with children can be a bit of a stress for parents.  They set an arbitrary date for their kids to look great, act sweet, mind their manners and smile!  Then they collect the outfits, rush out the door, put the kids in the car for the long drive to the studio where they will do their best to control their children, coax, threaten, cajole and plead… hoping that their little ones will look beautiful and precious and happy even if they are completely different in real life.  The session results in bribes that get bigger and bigger or threats that become so unrealistic that the children (even the two-year-old) know their parents are bluffing on the threats and lying about the rewards.  And this is what the parents are paying good money for?  Everyone wants a beautiful portrait of their children on the wall and most of us hope that it will show off the very best in our kids.  It has been hard raising kids and parents want to show everyone what amazing little people they have created and trained.

Well, here is the problem as I see it, and I have seen a lot of child portrait sessions.  The problem is that parents are too eager to micromanage the portrait session that they are paying for.  They have hired someone who is skilled at finding those precious moments, who has a talent for interacting with kids, even a gift of connecting with children on a level that the parents may never be able to accomplish on their own, and yet they will stress and threaten and even direct their children during the photo shoot.  If you are a photographer, you know exactly what I am talking about.  If you are a parent reading this post, take my advice and just step back and relax.  Your photographer should take the reigns on this photoshoot, let the photographer drive and you just get out of the way and enjoy the show.  It will be a crazy little show, but your bribes and threats aren’t going to make the photoshoot any better.  In fact, the rising stress levels will break your kids down faster.  Trust your photographer to make the beautiful images you see on their website for you without your help.  And if the photographer needs you to do something, they will ask you to help.  Otherwise, just hang out and enjoy watching the show.  If your kids are a bouncing off the walls that day, resist the urge to discipline… it’s a photo shoot, let it be fun for them.  Better images are made with children who are having fun that with children who are “holding still.”

My portrait sessions are called “Child Life Portraits,” because I want my clients to understand the reason for the images.  They are not an 18th-century oil painted portrait that shows a child as the world or the parent expects or hopes they will be with every flaw removed.  I am making images that express the nature of children AS THEY ARE, which is perfect and energetic and angry and sad and happy and curious and hyper and sleepy and bored and wonderful and silly and cute and yes, even messy.  When I make children’s portraits, they are sessions that go wherever the children take us and my clients are the kind of people who want a portrait of their children that shows who they really are with all their flaws and all of their eccentricities and all of their strengths and perfections.

Child Life Portraits are the real portraits that come from a photographer with a love for reality, they are born in appreciation for documentary photography, landscape photography and stylized editorial portraiture and fashion.  Being real doesn’t mean we never create a set for the portrait session or dress the kids up in great outfits or hand them props to play with, it just simply means that we inspire them to be themselves no matter where they are or what they are doing.  It is my goal as a children’s photographer to capture the essence of the child no matter what environment we are in.  If this idea sounds great to you, you may want to give me a call for your next portrait session.  If you can’t let go of the control… there are plenty of photographers out there for you.  I’m just not that guy.  If you are a photographer and want to create more images like the ones you see in this slideshow, I teach workshops online and across the world.  Contact me to find one near you.

The slideshow program I used for this slideshow is called Smart Slides.  Smart Slides is the absolute simplest tool available for making slideshows.  It takes a total of 30 seconds to make a stunning slideshow (not counting the upload of the images and song – that is based on your internet speeds).  It is based on the idea that the most important thing about your slideshow is your images, which I agree with completely.  There are only three steps:  add the images, choose the music, choose the transitions. That’s it.  Here is where the Smart Slides tool shines: Smart Slides produces the cleanest, most perfect slideshows available in any tool on the planet.  I upload 4K or larger images, the system makes the appropriately sized images for every size device and then feeds those images to the slideshow as needed for the device on which the slideshow is being played.  For instance, if you are reading this on your 27-inch Retina display, you have probably noticed that other slideshows are a little pixelated on your screen, things don’t look great in full-screen mode and that is because you have a very high-resolution monitor.  This slideshow will look GREAT on your monitor, on your iPhone, iPad, laptop… it doesn’t matter what you play it on, it will look perfect as long as you feed the slideshow from Smart Slide’s servers.  There is also a 1080P HD download option and I am posting that one on Vimeo.  I suggest you watch it once on Vimeo in HD and once on my blog in 4K to see the true difference between a HD Video File and a 4K HTML Slideshow Feed.  I am in love with the quality of the Smart Slides slideshows for my Blog.  The one shortcoming in the system is that when you post on Facebook, you really need to download the HD video file and post it so that Faceboook sees it as a video rather than a link out (Facebook likes video in the actual feed and they don’t like links out).  They have some music that comes with the service, but as you should know by now, I am a big fan of Triple Scoop Music’s incredible library of music.

30 Days Project: Here Comes the Bride

Here comes the bride: A collection of wedding images

I have been photographing weddings for a long time now.  I think my first wedding was in 1995.  I remember it well, it was my sister’s wedding.  That’s right, you have to start somewhere.  I was in the photography program at Arizona State University and had a camera, so why not?

The slideshow I made yesterday was all about landscapes!  Go back and read my story if you didn’t already.  To quote myself: I was using “the kind of camera you see in the late 1800s with the guy under a dark cloth, looking into a camera that looks a bit like an accordion.  It was a beast to carry around, but I thought I was going to be Ansel Adams.  Little did I know that I would stray completely from that format and favor documentary imagery and end up photographing people almost exclusively for the next 25 years.”  I am talking about a twenty-pound 4×5 camera.  That’s the camera I chose to use to photograph my sister’s wedding.  I can assure you, it was not documentary style photography.  And let me be clear, I wasn’t as good at making a perfect exposure as I am now.  My sister still hates her wedding photos and I don’t blame her.  But we all have to start somewhere.  I just did my practicing on people I love.

Will I show them to you?  Not in this slideshow!  Maybe someday…

So, as I said, I have been photographing weddings for a long time and I have been blessed to be a part of the most amazing events, I have been in the most beautiful places, I have experienced the most touching moments and I have been able to capture it all with my camera.  I have to admit that I have no idea what to do when I go to a wedding and I am not the photographer.  I am lost.  So this slideshow is a collection of images from many years of wedding photography that spans well over a decade and a half and around the world.  I remember the moment each of these images was created.   That is the effect of imagery on memory and emotion, images are the keys that open the gates that lead into the gardens of emotion in our minds.

While I was making this collection of images, I was listening to an entire list of songs from Triple Scoop Music, which I will talk about in a future video in this series.  This song stuck out to me as perfect for the images.  But it was the cadence of the song that excited me most about pairing it with these images.  As you watch the slideshow, you will see why.  I got to play with the gaps in the song and toy with the viewer a bit by withdrawing the imagery.  It is the law of opposition: the darkness and emptiness make the next image so much more impactful.  Every slideshow and every set of images is different and each deserves its own musical score… that is why it is so great to have a vast collection of licensed music at my fingertips.

Daniel & Megan’s Wedding at The Grand Canyon

They were married at the Grand Canyon on Shoshone Point in a small, intimate affair in the largest cathedral on the planet.  The vast and stark majesty of the canyon must have provided an extreme contrast to New York, their home.  Rising cities and blue oceans to rock cliffs that fall thousands of feet into the earth.  If you are going to have a destination wedding, you may as well make it somewhere completely different than home… and they did.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the wedding.

I loved this little necklace hanger.  It gave me about 15 minutes of entertainment while Megan was getting her makeup done.  I ran around the room collecting the items you see in the photo.  There are a number of these items that are special family heirlooms.  The old and the new, all together.

The rooms at the El Tovar (and all the hotels at the Canyon) are very small, so you take the space you can find and work within it.  I suppose we have to remind ourselves when this hotel was built.  I know it is young by European standards, but here in America, something that was built in 1905 is pretty old and it seems that people did not need much space back then.  Have you noticed the small hard sided suitcases they could carry their entire life’s wardrobe in?  I rest my case…

I loved this shot.  There was a lot of flare from the window, so the film treatment helped to enhance the mood and feeling of the image.  I love how the light wraps around the bride and through the dress.

Both the ring and the handkerchief are old, so we aged the image a bit to work with the age of the items.  I love that she chose a dress that has the same antique nature with a little extra sparkle.  It all works together quite well.

Late July, early August in the canyon is the monsoon season.  So you may get rain any given afternoon.  So, if you are getting married there, durring that timeframe, you have to be flexible with your timeframes.  I asked Megan to track the rain the day before the wedding and note the times it rained.  Armed with that information, a little observation of the clouds positions and movement and with a little prognostication, we made the call that we should move the wedding up an hour to avoid any rain.  And it was perfect.

The broken cloud cover was beautiful and it never rained on the wedding.  I think it may have rained a little later that evening, but the weather was absolutely perfect throughout the entire wedding and portrait session.  And the light, while occasionally harsh as the sun broke through a cloud here and there, was full of drama.

You know, I am usually much more interested in long lenses and shallow depth of field, but when you have skies and vistas like this, wide lenses and small f stops start making a lot of sense.

You know, when I was young, I spent time photographing the Grand Canyon (this is when I thought I would be the next Ansel Adams), but I couldn’t make an image of the canyon that was anything but boring.  Of course we all know that practice makes a big difference, but I think that I just saw the canyon as a big hole in the ground.  It wasn’t until I started photographing weddings at the canyon that I started making interesting photographs of the canyon.  I have a few ideas as to why that is:

1.  When you are shooting a wedding, you are in the same place for a long time, and you have time to observe things as they change.  Being on the edge of the canyon during a wedding is fascinating.  In a church, you are looking at the same walls, the same candles, the same pews for the duration of the ceremony.  And while you are looking to make interesting vignettes and grand images of the space, the space does not change.  In the canyon, every minute brings a new lighting scenario, a new cloud formation, new shadows, new highlights… it is alive with activity.  Let’s suppose I had spent  that kind of time at the edge of the canyon when I was younger.  Perhaps I would have found a moment that was worthy of a photograph.

2.  I am shooting for a client who expects to see the beauty they saw during their wedding day.  So, I am really “working” on my compositions and my exposures and my ideas.  I don’t think I was ever as dedicated to making a great image as when I started having someone pay me to make them.  With a fee comes a lot of pressure to perform.  Good thing I thrive under pressure.

3.  I found meaning in what I was doing.  In my youth, I was just taking pictures, with no direction, no purpose.  But now, everywhere I go, I have a story to tell, I have a book in my head that I am trying to complete.  I know what I need to tell the story.  I am often surprised with new sideline stories, events and ideas, but I am always keenly aware of what it takes to tell the story.  This internal “shot list” makes the entire experience meaningful and keeps me engaged.  To say nothing about how important this event is to my clients… this just serves to amplify and heighten the meaning of my work.  I am not just telling A story, I am telling THE story of their life!  Knowing that, makes the purpose of telling the story absolutely critical.  And knowing what you are doing matters, makes all the difference.

So when you see a beautiful photo of the Grand Canyon, you think, “oh, that looks beautiful,” but then you see a beautiful image of the canyon on the moment two young people said “I do,” it means a lot more to them and maybe even to you.

Daniel is one cool cat.  I love this shot.  It looks like he is ready to take off backward over the canyon.  We had some strong sunlight breaking through the clouds during our portrait session, so we pulled out the large soft box to help wrap the light around the right side of his body a little more.  Just filling in the natural shadows a bit is all that needed to be done.  The sun was doing the bulk of the work for us.

 Eirc Greenhaulgh (my second photographer and assistant) was tasked with hanging that large soft box over the edge to get around the groom and fill in the shadows on this next one.  At one point, I had to talk Eric into backing off the edge a little.  I’m pretty daring, but he was crazy!  I think there is an ancient proverb that says something like, “When a man is holding a 30×40 inch sail, that man should not stand on the edge of a 800 foot cliff.”

If I had ordered the light, just the way I wanted it, I would have asked for the light happening in the background to happen throughout the entire canyon, but once I brought it back into the studio and stared working on the images, I found that I responded to the darkness in the bottom left hand corner of the image.  It seems to heighten the drama to see  the cliff overlooking not only a deep precipice, but a rich darkness.  It almost seems that the light emanates from the bride.  Sometimes, we are better off not getting exactly what we want, because the results are better than we might have concocted ourselves.  When you photograph in locations like this, you are really in collaboration with the earth itself and its Maker.

 Megan had a moment where she needed to sit down for lack of food (she had not eaten enough during the day).  So Debra (our stellar GC Coordinator) ran some granola mix and water down to us.  Well, Megan had taken a seat right there on that rock and Daniel stood by her side for support.  As we talked, I saw the perfect photo.  So, we relaxed for about 15 minutes and then, when she was ready to go, I told her to stay where she was and we got this shot.  It is one of my absolute favorite shots of the day.  So while I would like to remind all brides to make sure to eat throughout the day to avoid getting a little light headed, we would not have ended up with one of my favorite shots had Megan not needed a little break.  She kept appologizing, but really Megan, we can’t thank you enough for needing a break.

I suppose the point should be made (and I tell my brides this all the time) that it doesn’t matter what they are doing, I am going to be getting great images of it.  Even sitting down because you feel a little light headed… yep, we’ll get a great shot!  That’s what is so exciting about the work I do.  I am challenged moment to moment to create something great no matter what is going on.  That’s a fun kind of pressure.

Thanks again to David & Debra Joaquim, who put together the entire wedding.  Debra does such a great job accenting the natural beauty of the canyon and both of them do a great job officiating and watching over their clients.

On our way back to the El Tovar Hotel we had to stop the car for this sunset.  I would have preferred to get to higher ground, perhaps a balcony, etc, but those colors only last for seconds.  Good night!
