I grew up in a one-horse town where entertainment was scarce, so I spent my time developing my talents in music and photography. I thought then, that I wanted to be a rock star, perhaps a war photographer, or something equally fantastic. But as I grew older I recognized that what I really wanted was family.

An ordinary moment with my wife and children is more extraordinary than any life I had imagined in my youth. So I am not a rock star… but my two boys still dance to my music and my daughter loves to take pictures with her daddy.

An ordinary moment with my wife and children is more extraordinary than any life.

Love, commitment, relationship, character… these are the things which inspire me. These are the things I look for through the camera.

Whether it is a wedding or a portrait, the goal is still the same: I capture the feelings, emotions, relationships and energy without calling too much attention to fact that I am there. What I capture is real and beautiful.

I earned an undergraduate degree in photography and a masters degree in the history of the medium. As a masters student I grew very fond of teaching and as a recovering rock star wanna-be, I am addicted to performing. So I get my fix by teaching workshops and lecturing to professional photographers and photo enthusiasts throughout the US and across the globe.

And when I am not teaching other photographers, I practice the art of telling stories by documenting your most important moment in life and it is my greatest honor to do so.

The problem with many photography workshops today is that they involve eager students standing by and watching a master photographer shoot. This is not the way to learn. Students must get their hands dirty and make mistakes. These essential mistakes should not be made on the job. The best place to make them is in a safe environment with a master teacher watching over and guiding you past your mistakes and ultimately on to success.

As a teacher and educator of almost twenty years, I know the value of hands-on learning.

As a teacher and educator of almost twenty years, I know the value of hands-on learning. That’s why I use the Socratic method to teach my photographic workshops. I present the concepts, demonstrate skills, and then put my students in the driver’s seat to practice those skills. I am there all the while, deeply attentive to my student’s experience, asking and answering the questions that I know from experience will bring understanding and growth.

I am putting my talent, creativity, and expertise to the task of crafting an amazing learning experience. I am passionate about teaching and I can’t wait to meet you and work together with you to develop your photography skills.
