The Karren Family Portrait 2011

The Karren’s family portraits were taken in Shreveport, Louisiana this fall.  As you can see the autumn colors are out in force.  It was absolutely beautiful.  Here are some of my favorite images from the portrait session.

The barn is a perfect backdrop.  I am so glad that someone has not taken it upon themselves to repair this old barn, it is too perfect as it is.

This shot just makes me smile.  I love the implications of the older brother’s gesture.

I love the throwing leaves concept.  Do people do this outside of a photo shoot though, I don’t remember.  It has been so long since I have lived somewhere with seasons and leaves that fall off trees, I have forgotten.  I think as a kid I used to rake the leaves and jump in them, but I can’t be certain…

I love this shot.

This was an interesting shot.  The barn is a beautiful red barn, as you have seen, so why didn’t I keep this in color?  Well, that fence is an ugly pinkish color.  Enough said.

The Herrera Family Portrait 2011

The Herrera’s family portraits were taken in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana, which is one of my favorite down-towns in the country, and I’ve been to a lot of cities around the world.  There are several reasons for it being my favorite, the first is the beautiful textures, the second is the impressive number of different options in a relatively small area, and third is that is it not a busy metropolis (parking is not an issue, there are not a ton of people getting in the way, etc).  The Herrera’s are on their way to Spain I believe where Mr. Herrera will be forming a Christian congregation, I wish them the very best.  God bless you Herrera’s.

Here are a few of my favorite images of the Herrera children.

The Gregston Family Portrait 2011

The Gregston family portraits were taken at the Norton Museum in Shreveport, Louisiana.  The location is zoo heavily wooded that you can take photos there all day long, but the light is perfect in the mid morning and late afternoon.  I have photographed the Gregston family several times before, so I have been able to watch these kids grow up.  I’ve said this before, but it is fun to see a family once a year and watch those immediate changes that we don’t see in the day to day living with our own children.  from year to year, though, there are striking changes that occur and I enjoy seeing them.

Here are my favorite images from the Gregston family portrait shoot.

The Brownell Family Portrait 2011

The Brownell family portraits were taken in Shreveport, Louisiana.  I have photographed the Brownell family a number of times, so I get to watch the kids grow up.  It is interesting to see them grow up in size, but a lot of their mannerisms stay the same.  I can now predict what they are going to do and what kind of look I am going to get out of them.  Here are my favorite images from the portrait session.

Normally, I don’t put the “family portrait” into my favorites.  I take them, but they are not the most interesting because they are not real… but I mention this one because of the dog. I did a lot of work for PetSmart earlier in my career and perfected my animal noises.  The great thing about dogs is that they don’t care about visual stimuli, its sounds that grab their attention,so I can stay behind my camera and just make cat noises and the dog will be the most attentive subject in the portrait.

And of course everyone needs the hero shot of their dog.

Give children a chance and they will just run.  I personally prefer to sleep.  That seems to be one of the major differences between me and children.  They run, I don’t.

OK, I love this series, mostly because it is what I expect out of the little one.  Last year, we got this same shot with both kids in superman outfits.  We didn’t have to tell him to do this, I can just assume that if I have big brother stand still, and them blow a few bubbles, his little brother will run back and forth, in and out of the frame gleefully chasing bubbles.  I think it is hilarious to see in still images.

This has to be the funniest shot of the session.  He is using all the lung power he has.  He’s serious about making some major bubbles.

The Barrow Family Portrait 2011

We photographed the Barrow family portrait in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana.  I love the textures of that city, everywhere you turn is a visual feast.  Their son is a little ball of energy and curiosity who never sits still, so we were on the go from start to finish, so it put us in a lot of different places throughout the portrait session.  When you have a portrait session with a child who wants to investigate everything and be on the move, you can’t fight it, you just have to go along for the ride.  So we did.

The Babboni Family Portrait Session 2011

I photographed the Babboni family last year, so it was nice to go back and say hello to the kids and family again.  The kids were quite good considering that they were in Disney World a few days before and drove all the way through to Shreveport for the portrait. I am honored to photograph any family, and I am doubly honored to be asked back to shoot them this year as well.  Here are my very favorite images from the Babboni family portrait session.

Just for Fun: A Christmas Party Photo Booth

Photo Booth at Christmas Party in Chandler Arizona

My church congregation had a Christmas party this Saturday and they wanted to do a photo booth rather than the typical kids on santa’s lap photos.  So our good friend Karen came up with this idea and her husband Paul and our very handy friend Carl built a wall out of drywall, cut a hole in it and hung this frame.  It was my job to set up the lights and photo booth.  This photo booth took up an entire room in the church, but it was cool as could be.  We set the camera on a tripod and then tethered the camera into the computer.  Sarah (Paul’s daughter) , our official photographer for the evening, was able to fire the shot from the computer and the image was them brought into Lightroom (my imaging software of choice) where I had already set up the crop, the vignette and the color treatment and other post processing.  The image was then displayed on a second monitor for everyone in line to see.  It was super cool.  Everyone loved it and the photos are super cool.

You probably recognize my good friend Kevin Burdick in the photo above.  You can find his music on iTunes or on his web site at www.kevinburdick.com.

I’m not going to show them all here, but I am going to post my favorite images here.

This one is fantastic.  I love it.

Teddy, the boy on the left is such a funny kid.  I love that he is climbing out of the photograph, leaving his family.

I was think about buying this piece of art, but decided it would creep me out to have my friend Scott staring out into my living room for eternity.  So I will leave it on the blog where he can stare at unsuspecting blog readers for eternity.

Carl built the wall.  All that work can make a man thirsty.  My daughter’s sippy cup was a refreshing option.

The Smiths: A Family Portrait in Chandler, Arizona

Here are a few of my favorite images from the Smith’s family portrait session in Chandler, Arizona at Tumbleweed Park.  I am growing to love that park more and more for photos and of course the kids love it too because it is full of interesting things and has a great playground.

The most challenging part was to keep the baby from eating the clover.

The original noise maker.  A stick and a fence.

I absolutely love this image.  Love it.

Bored but so very cute.

This image makes me smile.  The baby is not sure what to do here, and perhaps is looking at his sister to figure it out.  When I started shooting this, the obvious thought was to wait for them both to look through the windows, but that might have been too symmetrical.  I think I prefer this anyway.  Although I will never know.  The baby never looked through the window.

Go Devils! Megan’s ASU Graduation Portrait Session

Megan is an ASU Cheerleader (was, now se’s graduating), so needless to say she is a big ASU Football fan.  My wife was an ASU Marching Band musician, so I understand the fervor for the Devils.  Go Devils!  So Megan and I took to the streets in Tempe, Arizona to get some ASU Grad shots.  We were after a mixture of school spirit shots and graduation cap and gown type shots.  Here are a few of my favorite images from Megan’s ASU graduation portrait session.

This location is a parking garage on the ASU Campus in Tempe, Arizona.  It provided the open shade with something interesting in the background.  It is only partially covered.  The roof is a latticework of solar panels.

ASU Senior Portraits in Tempe Arizona (1)

I love this shot with the GO DEVILS block in front and Megan’s got the attitude, so it’s perfect.

ASU Senior Portraits in Tempe Arizona (2)

This is one of my favorites.  I know, it is just a close up headshot and nothing super fancy, but Megan looks great in it.

ASU Senior Portraits in Tempe Arizona (3)

We snuck into the basketball arena.  I like to sneak around when taking portraits.  It turns a normal portrait session into a possible security guard chase, which would be exciting…

ASU Senior Portraits in Tempe Arizona (4)

We parked in a reserved spot next to old main and ran out on to the lawn to get this last set of shots.  Old Main is the only building on the ASU campus that feels like a old style university.  ASU is more of a modern city.  So, I like the feel of Old Main, it makes the shot feel more collegiate.

So now we come to the end of the day.  The sun is down and we are operating on very little ambient light.  Here is where the Canon 1D Mark IV shines.  I am shooting this image at 4600 ISO and leaving them in color (thanks to Lightroom 3‘s incredible noise reduction).  There is a bit of grain in them, but its manageable grain and looks cool (of course I like grain).  You can’t get a better available light scenario than this, but you have to have a serious camera to make use of this light.

Nathan: A Senior Portrait, Queen Creek, Arizona

Nathan is a Senior at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona.  We made the drive to Queen Creek to take advantage of an old abandoned warehouse and some farmland for his senior portraits.  I keep asking myself why photographers like old broken things and the best thing I can come up with is that we love texture.  I think I also have an interest in the history of an object or a location.

Senior portrait in Queen Creek, Arizona of Hamilton High School Senior

I love the drama on this shot.  No lights, just one large door opening up to a large bay with indirect light filtering through.  There is a lot of volume in the image.

Senior portrait in Queen Creek, Arizona of Hamilton High School Senior

Softer light as we headed out into the bay, which was perfect to capture this genuine smile.

Senior portrait in Queen Creek, Arizona of Hamilton High School Senior

I thought the guitar shots needed a little funkification, so I went for a slight cross process look.  I think it worked well.

Needless to say, this lone tree was calling to me as we shot.
